If you love road trips and history, then this unforgettable road trip through the Rocky Mountains in British Columbia should be on your to-do list!  The David Thompson Historic Route was originally mapped out by the famous explorer David Thompson in the late 1700’s, and you can follow in the footsteps of this great Canadian Explorer who mapped out vast areas of western North America and Canada.  The route on Alberta Highway 11, from Banff National Park to Highway 12, just outside Stettler, will take you through some of the most dramatic scenery in the Rockies.  A good way to explore the region is with a Motorhome or Campervan which gives you the freedom to stop and linger whenever you like.

Start your journey in the magnificent Banff National Park, about 120km from Calgary in the province of Alberta.  Spend some time in this ridiculously scenic wonderland, enjoying the many recreational activities that are on offer all year round.  The scenery is outstanding and there is wildlife to be viewed all over and 13 campgrounds to choose from.

From Banff National Park you need to set out on Highway 11.  This is not a long drive – only around 200km but there is a lot to see, so take a couple of days to explore the area thoroughly.  Here are some of the highlights of the drive:

Siffleur Falls Trail – look out for the parking lot and then take the easy walk over the suspension bridge to the falls.

Kootenay Plains – these are home to large herds of elk and mountain sheep;

At Cline River, on the shores of Abraham Lake, you can take an adrenalin-filled helicopter ride high over the soaring mountains and visit the David Thompson resort.

Next, visit the Bighorn Dam and Crescent Falls; the falls can easily be accessed and offers amazing views of the Bighorn River Gorge.  A little further on you will come to Fish and Goldeye lakes, before reaching Nordegg – a great place to stay overnight and visit the historic mine site.

On the final stretch of the drive visit the Shunda Viewpoint for breathtaking views and wonderful photo opportunities en-route to Rocky Mountain House and the end of the route.

There are almost limitless enjoyable activities along this scenic route if you have the time to find them!  In Rocky Mountain House you can try your hand and Dog Sledding in winter or various adventure sports in summer.
