Forgotten World Highway
Explore the Forgotten World Highway, New Zealand
Travel the “Forgotten Wold” by Campervan Rental
New Zealand has a network of themed highways. These help holidaymakers explore their special interests from the comfort of their motorhome rental and campervan hire. The ‘Forgotten World Highway’ road traces old bridle paths connecting Taumarunui and Stratford on North Island. The 150-kilometre route of the Forgotten World highway is a similar distance from Wellington and Auckland, and makes for a pleasant two to three day diversion.
Driving on New Zealand’s Themed Highways
New Zealand’s hilly terrain lends itself to narrow winding roads, some with tight corners. They have regular passing places so there is no need to stress if driving behind slow-moving vehicles. What may initially seem like a short journey can take longer than expected. When exploring themed highways allow twice what you anticipate, excluding stops, as a rule of thumb. In return, you share relaxing journeys with some of the world’s friendliest drivers.
Discovering the Forgotten World of Taranaki
The Taranaki region of North Island takes its name from a dormant volcano. The region is exceptionally fertile, thanks to generous rains and volcanic soil from ancient eruptions. There is a strong MÄori presence providing opportunities to explore an ancient culture. If you think the landscape looks familiar, you may have watched the movie ‘The Last Samurai’ where the volcano becomes Mount Fuji in the film.
How 19th Century Bridle Paths Became Themed Highways
As New Zealand’s itinerant traders looked for shortest routes between early settlements, their horses’ hooves left paths behind them. These became tracks and later roads. Accordingly, many of New Zealand’s themed highways are a bit ‘upsy downsy’ as the locals say. Route 43 between Stratford and Taumarunui wiggles its way over four mountain passes. At one point, it traces a twisting gorge. There is a single-lane tunnel, and fifteen kilometres of gravel.
A Pleasant Place to Stop Called Whangamomona
Whangamomona is a convenient midpoint to stop and stretch your legs on the ‘Forgotten World’ route. It is an unofficial ‘republic’ with a president and a place to stamp passports. There is a basic campground with lawns for parking. From there, it is a short walk to the Whangamomona Hotel with excellent country-style facilities.
After you have enjoyed a pleasant lunch in one of few towns that has known goats and poodles as presidents, it is time to jump into your recreational vehicle and continue on your journey along one of New Zealand’s loveliest themed highways.
