RV Holiday by Ferry to the Outer Hebrides

The Outer Hebrides are an archipelago of islands off the west coast of Scotland. There is a comprehensive daily ferry service connecting them from the mainland, and with each other. The ships can accommodate motorhome rental and campervan hire vehicles for your Outer Hebrides RV holiday; although being small it is best to book ahead. These islands have an ancient history, with archaeological relics dating back 6,500 years, and later occupations by Celtic Tribes, Norwegian Vikings, Scottish Clan Chiefs, and finally the Kings of England. Recreational vehicle hire is available at Edinburgh or Glasgow.

The Pleasantly Mild Climate of the Outer Hebrides

The islands benefit from the Gulf Stream bringing warmer temperatures from the Gulf of Mexico all the way to Northern Europe. Accordingly, climatic conditions are relatively mild and steady. Average temperatures are 6 °C (44 °F) in January and 14 °C (57 °F) in summer. Summer days are relatively long. May to August is the driest period, making this a good time for a motorhome holiday.

Recreational Vehicle Collection and Drive to Ferry Port

The drive from Inverness to Ullapool, from where most ferries depart is a pleasant 90-kilometre / 57-mile journey on good roads. Ullapool is the largest settlement in the area, and a good place to stock up on any special requirements that may be harder to find in smaller island shops. The town hosts traditional musical fests throughout the year. Try to include one in your itinerary if you can.

Things to See and Do When on the Outer Hebrides

There are sixteen islands in the archipelago, of which the Lewis and Harris group in the northernmost portion is the largest being joined by a bridge. Lewis is a wild and sometimes wind-swept place, with red deer, otter, and rich diversity of birdlife. The smaller Harris portion has some spectacular beaches for surfing and kite flying. The single-lane roads are ideal cycle paths across undulating terrain.

Magic Moments to Remember from an Outer Hebridean Visit

There is far too much variety to cover in a single post. Suffice to say, hire an RV at Inverness, drive to Ullapool, jump on a ferry, and explore as many islands as you can. Things you could remember for a long, long time include immersing yourself in local culture, feeling like castaways exploring gloriously unspoiled beaches, and enjoying delicious beef, lamb, langoustine, lobster, and crab pub lunches to live, traditional Gaelic music and song.

While driving back to Edinburgh or Glasgow to return the recreational vehicle that served you well, your mind will be alive with memories of mysterious ancient standing stones, and Iron Age stone broch houses brooding over isolated coastlines. You will no longer wonder why the Celts, Vikings, Scots, and English feuded over these islands. Put simply, there could be no better place anywhere on earth for a fascinating motorhome holiday.
