Noble Hohenzollern Route in Germany
The joys of classic Germany often hide in smaller details alongside niche driving routes one of which we explore today. We collect our mobile holiday home from the motorhome rental depot in Frankfurt. Then we drive an easy 200 kilometres (125) miles to reach the 300 kilometre (185 mile) Hohenzollern route that meanders through southwest Germany.
Traveling in the Footsteps of German Hohenzollern Nobility
The aristocratic owners of magnificent Hohenzollern Castle would have travelled our campervan rental route often to attend banquets, weddings, and other occasions. However, their stagecoaches might have bumped uncomfortably as they traced the route from the upper Neckar Valley through the Albs. And onward through the Danube Valley to Lake Constance, and Baden-Württemberg’s fortresses that stood the test of time. Nowadays the going is easy thanks to superb roads.
Our luxury RV or motorhome rental is a pleasant improvement over over-priced hotels, especially at the height of season. We have everything we need with us. We decide whether to eat in or eat out. More often than not, we choose a local delicacy and prepare it in our own kitchen: Or even on the portable barbeque on our private caravan park stand.
The Magnificent Forests of the Hohenzollern Region
The local nobility kept the best hunting grounds for themselves. Hence, the region boasts original forests with pristine rivers meandering through them. There are numerous ancient abbeys, palaces, castles, and museums to explore; making the area part of the scenic Romantic Road in Germany. Perhaps the finest of all is King Ludwig Second’s Neuschwanstein Castle, which produced more princes, kings, and emperors than any other in Germany.
German nobility in the Hohenzollern region knew how to build well. The architect of Neuschwanstein Castle placed it on a cone-shaped mountain affording extraordinary views from a structure so perfect it can be hard to believe it is not an illusion. We find a convenient parking space for our motorhome with nearby ablutions, and set out to explore a building that outperforms Disneyland.
The Feel-Good Feeling That Goes With Motorhome Rentals
We feel like kings and queens as we explore the Hohenzollern route further, as it meanders through the loveliest parts of southern Germany. As we do, we wonder at the treasure chambers and secret passages we discovered. We realise we have something in common with medieval aristocrats.
The motorhome rental we returned back to Frankfurt at the end of the loop gave us the same freedom to go where we wanted to, even on a whim. We will do this again now we know we have the ultimate solution for relaxing holidays.
