California Dreaming Los Angeles to San Francisco
This is one of our all-time favourites. There are great international airports at either end of the 600 kilometre (380 mile) journey. You can follow it either way, depending on whether the driver or passenger wants the ocean views at either end. In our case, we collect the vehicle from the motorhome rental depot at Los Angeles Airport. Then we head in an approximately north-westerly direction on the first leg of our Los Angeles to San Francisco journey.
Day One of Our Trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco
The weather in California is great, and the motorhome rental is superbly equipped as we expected. We stop by in Santa Barbara on a south-facing section of coastline between the tall Santa Ynez Mountains, and the blue water of the bay. We find a great superstore just off the roadside, and purchase fresh food and beverages for lunch and supper.
Then we do what we always do when traveling in a camper van, motorhome or RV rental along the coast. That’s find a quiet parking, brew a pot of coffee and make fresh sandwiches for lunch. Dishes done, we bypass Santa Margarita. Hearst Castle will have to wait for next time. Instead, we stop by in San Simeon for a night and a day.
How San Simeon Makes Such a Great Day 2
San Simeon began as a mission station in 1797. In 1865, William Randolph Hearst’s father bought part of the spread. He splashed out and developed a jetty where he could park his luxury yacht. And then presumably follow an easygoing track to his famously extravagant castle. We have a great time chilling out in the company of a northern elephant seal rookery, although we camp some distance away so we can sleep through the night.
Day 3 Cruising and Dreaming to San Francisco
From there, our journey to San Francisco is a simple 360 kilometre (230 mile) meander along some of the loveliest coastline we have seen. We take a few detours to luxury seaside resorts. To tell you the truth we feel better off, because we can holiday every night at a different place.
Our journey from Los Angeles to San Francisco ends at the famous international airport, which is quite a destination on its own. We return the rental motorhome after stopping nearby for a late lunch. After a pleasant afternoon wandering through duty free and buying absolutely nothing, we board our flight for a comfortable night home.
