History and Culture
Costa del Sol has a history that dates back some 2,500 years. Phoenicians first settled in the region due to its strategic location for trade. They were followed by the Greeks and then the Romans. Finally there were the Moors, whose empire flourished until the siege of Malaga in mid-15th century.
As you explore Costa del Sol, stop by the cities of Nerja and Malaga. Both will give context to this area’s cultural diversity. Another option is to rent a campervan and experience the region’s natural history. From cave dwellings dating back 2,000 years to walking the Caminito del Rey, you’re bound to appreciate the region’s beauty from sea to sky.
Experience the Seaside
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that to explore Costa del Sol usually means to experience the seaside. Sunshine almost year-round and subtropical Mediterranean climate make it a prime destination for anyone hoping to get his or her tan on. Also, the water temperature ranges from 20-25 centigrade making it ideal for swimming. Finally, there are opportunities for deep-sea fishing, sailing, and other water-related sports.
Popular resort towns such as Marbella and Fuengirola contain plenty of accommodation options including Puerta de Aduares and Florida Spa. If you want somewhere a bit more off the beaten path, consider accommodations around El Bajondillo beach.
Hit the Links
In addition to the azure seas, another draw to Costa del Sol is its beautiful golf courses. There are several of them in Marbella including the courses at Los Monteros Spa and Golf and Golf Hotel Guadalmina. If you want more challenging play, take on the tour-designed courses like the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande or the Club de Golf Valderrama. The latter was the home of the 1997 Ryder Cup.
Green fees for courses range from 100 euros for those located within resorts to 370 euros for Valderrama. Make sure you book in advance if you want to play in the elite clubs.
There are a variety of activities to do in the region. As you discover and explore Costa del Sol by car or by rental camper van, you’re bound to experience nature at its best.
