Brussels Historic Windmills to see touring in Belgium

Belgium is a one of the smallest and safest countries in Europe. It is also forward-looking in terms of green energy, although it lacks the capital of its wealthy neighbour Holland. Touring Brussels historic windmills in Belgium – there are over a hundred of them in working order – are an early example of alternative energy in action. There are several particularly fine ones in the Brussels Capital Region we went to see, after we collected our rental motorhome in Brussels.

Meandering Among Brussels Historic Windmills in Northern Belgium

Travelling without an itinerary is the essence of happy motoring holidays, although it can be nerve-wracking trying to find a country hotel we can afford. Motorhoming and campervanning puts this problem to bed, because the accommodation travels with us wherever we go.

Belgium has a wonderful variety of well-presented camping spots where we can overnight. Not to mention some of the finest historic windmills anywhere. So this time, we are not going to suggest the route to take from Brussels. Instead, we would like you to look up our windmills on a map, and agree among yourselves how to navigate.

Three Fascinating Brussels Historic Windmills When Not in a Hurry

It is somewhat pointless to set aside a quick half hour for a Belgian windmill tour. We suggest you spend a day and two nights in the vicinity of each of them. You will learn more local history chatting in a pub than any official tour guide knows. Your first port of call could be the Luizenmolen (Luizen Mill) in Anderlecht. This is a magnificently restored wooden grinding mill originally erected in 1862.

The Evere Mill in the town of the same name is part of the Brussels Museum of The Mill and Food. Indeed, these historic mills were once an essential part of the food chain, as they transformed grain into flour so bakers could do their work.  Unfortunately the windmill sails are missing. However this does provide a clearer view of the imposing structure that contains the powerful milling machinery.

Our final Brussels historic windmill on the list is in a town with the almost unpronounceable name Woluwé-Saint-Lambert. Its Verbrande Molen, or burned mill, is another fine example of Belgium’s wooden historic windmills.  Brussels is never more than a few hours away from any of these fine historic sites. You may be assured of a warm welcome, and friendly service at our Brussels rental RV depot whenever your journey is done.
