Bodega Bay Drive from Oakland California
Oakland is one of America’s truly great places on the Pacific coast, although it is somewhat overshadowed by San Francisco 25 minutes away across the bay. The California region has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate with 260 sunny days annually. Many visitors are happy to pick up a luxury motorhome rental in Oakland, and spend a week exploring the surroundings going nowhere in particular. The Bodega Bay Drive takes you on some spectacular Pacific coastal scenery.
Bodega Bay Drive from Oakland on a California Sunny Day
Holidaymakers are increasingly turning to rental motorhomes for accommodation and transport. Because they offer unrivalled space for bicycles and surfboards, and a great saving in cost and inconvenience compared to hotels. Once they have unpacked their clothes, they stay unpacked. So no more creases from refolding, and no frustrations for spectacles left behind in the motel.
The road to Bodega Bay leads on to Eureka along a glorious coast. We might continue on to there, or we might turn inland to Sacramento. Nevada lies further down that same road. We will decide this later, unless we find a holiday camp to spend the week in Bodega Bay itself.
The traveling distance is next to nothing at 70 miles / 100 kilometres and we have the whole day to do it. Therefore we follow the scenic route beginning in San Francisco, and heading out across Bay Bridge. We stop at Fisherman’s Wharf, pick up fresh fillets of fish, pop them in the motorhome refrigerator, and continue on our journey.
We exit at Highway One, and follow the winding two-lane road via Muir Beach, Stinson Beach, and Point Reyes National Seashore Park. The latter turns out a treasure of a place to visit, with amazing walks along the coast. We stop over for two days. Who could possibly resist a place like this?
Arriving in Bodega Bay and What We Find
We discover Bodega Bay is a five-mile-wide destination for sport fishing, shellfish harvesting, and recreational water sports of all kinds. The headland at the northern end shelters a small harbour across a jetty. The village is a real treat, and we find a well-serviced campsite for the rental home.
We have a wonderful time wandering along glorious golden sands leading inland past isolated holiday homes. Do you remember Alfred Hitchcock’s movie, The Birds? Well this is where they filmed it, and it is as evocative as ever. To answer your question, yes, we travelled inland after that, and returned the motorhome or RV rental in Sacramento after a glorious journey.
