One of North America’s most extraordinary places for a road trip is the Pacific Northwest. For full measure, we will not limit the region to only Oregon and Washington in the USA; but also include British Columbia, Canada. The natural beauty of this region is hard to overstate. Its mountains and volcanoes dominate the landscape while rugged coasts offer world-class marine life watching. And that’s just a few of its many awesome characteristics. Read on to see a selection of the best places for an RV holiday in the Pacific Northwest.
Great Areas for an RV Holiday in the Pacific Northwest
Although the region certainly has its fair share of great cities; most notably Portland, Seattle and Vancouver; it is nature that draws most people in. From historic river gorges and wild coastlines to active volcanoes and primeval forests; an RV holiday in the Pacific Northwest will be a trip you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
1. Mount Hood and Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
Oregon is home to numerous beautiful natural attractions. Two of the greatest ones are Mount Hood, a distinct volcano near Portland, and the absolutely stunning and historic Columbia River Gorge. Offering everything from epic hiking and camping to waterfalls and historic sites; this area makes for one of the best places for an RV holiday in the Pacific Northwest. Pick up an RV in Portland and spend three to four days exploring.
2. Olympic National Park, Washington
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Olympic National Park consists of four different areas, ranging from wild coastline to alpine valleys. This variety in landscapes results in a huge biodiversity; its three main ecosystems in pristine conditions and offering gorgeous natural scenery. About 95% of the entire park is designated wilderness; which means that there are plenty of opportunities for you to immerse yourself in one of the world’s greatest collections of landscapes. A three-day stay is the absolute minimum to really experience the park.
3. Yoho National Park, British Columbia
Across the border in Canada, British Columbia’s awesome national parks beckon. Especially Yoho National Park is spectacular, a sensational place to go for an RV holiday in the Pacific Northwest. It’s part of a collection four neighboring national parks—including such greats as Banff and Jasper National Parks in Alberta. You’ll have a hard time to find a better set of national parks anywhere in North America—except maybe in Utah.
4. Pacific Coast Scenic Byway, Oregon
One of the greatest coastal roads in the U.S.; Oregon’s Pacific Coast Scenic Byway runs for more than 350 miles along the Oregon coast, from Washington State down to California. It features an amazing diversity in landscapes, from rugged headlands and sandy beaches to charming towns and fishing communities. There is lots of public land, providing easy access to the great outdoors. Although this may not be an actual destination, in this case it’s the journey itself that makes it so great for an RV holiday in the Pacific Northwest.
5. Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, British Columbia
Another great coastal park, Pacific Rim National Park Reserve boasts coastal rain forests and rugged coasts. Hiking and wildlife watching are popular activities in the park reserve—it’s technically not an actual national park (yet). Often-spotted animals include black bears, raccoons and black-tailed deer, seals, porpoises and several whale species. Long-distance hikers will find hiking heaven on the exceptional 75-kilometer West Coast Trail while road trippers are certain to enjoy the Pacific Rim Highway.
